Thursday (3/29) was another nearly perfect day for weather. The temperature was once again in the mid- to high- 70’s, clear skies and a light breeze. It was a perfect day for a volkswalk in a very pretty city. When we got to the start, we discovered that there was a tour bus from Walking Adventures, International (they don’t have a web site, but they can be contacted by e-mail at walknadb@teleport.com). Most of the tour participants were from the Northwest, so we talked with them for awhile before we started walking.

On the walk, we passed through Forsythe Park and all of the park like squares in the old part of town. In addition, we walked along the riverfront. We saw the Mercer House, the one that is the center of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house that was remodeled a couple of years ago on the PBS show “This Old House,” and the home of Juliette Gordon Low (the founder of Girl Scouts). There isn’t really a lot that can be said about the walk, but pictures of some of the sights along the way may express the beauty of the walk.

We had bought some fresh vegetables from a roadside stand near Hunting Island. We decided to find a picnic area and fix these for dinner. We did, and the food was good, but we discovered that, at least when the wind isn’t blowing, there are a lot of gnats in the area. We wound up having to close ourselves into the car to be able to eat without spending our entire effort swatting at the little buggers.
